Frequently Asked Questions
If you cant find the answer to your questions below, just
drop us an e-mail or give us a call, we'll be very happy to try and help.
Why do you charge for Internet access when other
places do it for free?
Although this seems an excellent question, there is a very
simple answer. Indeed, many ISPs do offer free internet access but you do
get what you pay for (Or don't pay for in this case). Some users will be
best using a free provider and as long as they don't mind getting engaged
tones when trying to connect or very slow connections or advertisements
attached to their e-mails and web pages then that is fine.
However, if you need a reliable service that connects first time, every
time, that doesn't add adverts to everything, that gives you access to
commercial fast servers down a fast internet connection, that offers you
free support by both e-mail and telephone instead of these £1 per minute
help lines then we can provide you with the service you need at what we feel
to be a very reasonable price.
How fast can you get me set up?
It all depends upon how you contact us and what skill level you have. If
contacted by telephone, we normally can answer immediately even out of
office hours and if you have the skills to input the settings we give you
into your computer, we can normally have you up and running within 10
minutes.
We then send you an invoice, this saves waiting for payment slowing down the
response for you.
If you e-mail us with your request, we can normally get back to you within a
couple of hours as we check our incoming e-mail many times each day.
If you require a Domain Name registering, this may take a little longer.
Once we have submitted the request, there may be a short delay whilst
Nominet register the Domain name and point it to our name servers. Once this
is done, your web space is live but will normally take another 24 to 48
Hours before the rest of the world can see it. This is to allow the new name
to "Propagate" around the world.
If speed is of the essence, we can respond very quickly for you. We have
been known to get a basic web site registered, designed, published and
working within an hour of the initial phone call.
How do I produce a web site and get it on-line
fast?
Production of a website all depends upon your skill level but
we are here to help if needed. There are many software packages that can
help you produce the html pages (web pages) check out our
links page for some ideas. We prefer
Microsoft FrontPage XP for
doing our sites as it makes things much easier when you are trying to add
forms, page counters and so on. But there are plenty of others. You can even
produce web pages with Windows Notepad although that is for the more
experienced. Microsoft Word and Publisher can save their files as web pages
and they are OK if you are desperate but these programs are really best used
for what they are good at, word processing and desktop publishing. Once
you've sorted your files, you can upload them to your web space using a FTP
Programme such as WS FTP or by "Publishing" if using FrontPage.
If all this sounds too much, we can do the dirty work for you. Just give us
your ideas, the text you want to use, any pictures or graphs or drawings
you'd like included and your ideas for how you want it to look and what
message it is trying to get across. We can do the rest at a very reasonable
price.
We can also provide training to get you up and running with building your
own website effectively.
Where can I get the software I need for free?
There is a vast amount of excellent software available as freeware or
shareware at the Tucows site.
